Chung Ying Central: New Vegan Options

I love dim sum, I think it's tiny morsels of tasty treats that are fun to eat. This is why I was so happy to hear that Chung Ying Central had launched a new menu on the 18th January and had put a number of new vegan options onto that menu. I was even happier to be invited to try out those options and give a little feedback on the items that I tried. Read on to see that feedback. I previously reviewed CYC in 2017 and 2014

A few of the options I had tried before, one of those was the Veg Curry Parcels, which are veggie samosas basically, but with a Chinese twist! They were lovely. Crispy, well fried, well filled and accompanied by a great sweet chilli sauce to go alongside it. This cannot be faulted. On the menu they are described as having a "roots vegetables filling with light curry flavour" (£4).

Next up was the Veg Gyoza. I love gyoza. I've tried it at a number of places and this is one of the best places. Again executed well and accompanied by a lovely chilli soy sauce. I liked these but just wish they had been a tad bigger. That's mostly because I'm greedy. On the menu they are described as steamed dumplings that are then pan fried (£4).

Another of the options that I've tried before is the Monk's Dumplings. An option that you'll see in my review from 2014 and one that I adored then and now. I love the way it looks and tastes. Crunchy yet soft, well portioned and something I would eat more and more of. On the menu they are described as steamed dumplings with mixed fungi and vegetables (£4).

One of the newest option on the menu is the Crispy Tofu Skin with pancakes, hoisin sauce, spring onions and cucumbers (£13). This is so clever. Crispy yet crunchy and you can assemble exactly as you want. Loved the sauce with this. I've never had duck but I would happily have this again, especially as it's quite meaty in texture. I wish there was a half portion of this dish, to allow someone to try a number of items. But it's nice to see a vegan option that doesn't use a meat sub but has a meaty texture.

Another of the newest options is the Kimchi Dumplings (£4). I loved this option because it had a little fire and spice. I liked the size too and how easy they were to gobble up, something I took full advantage of! On the menu, it is described as containing korean preserved cabbage.

Lastly, it was all about the Buddha's Delight (£10) dish. This contains chinese veg, mix funghi and tofu, vermicelli and fermented tofu paste. I like the addition of vermicelli to this, it gave it a fun element and made sure it wasn't just a plate of veg. I just wish it had a little more spice or flavour to it, as I found it to be a tad boring in flavour. However, I loved the different kinds of veg and trying out a number that I didn't even recognise. A fun game to say the least!

Overall, my view of Chung Ying Central remains the same, that it's a great place for dim sum, however I now know they have a variety of vegan dim sum options too.

Would I go back? Yes, for some monk's dumplings and kimchi dumplings.

How did they cope with the vegan dietary requirement? Very easily but nothing is marked as vegan on the menu. It would be great to have these labelled or have a separate vegan menu

What are the prices like? Altogether this would come up to £39, reasonable for the portions of quality of food

What is eatery best for? A fun lunch, a good place to catch up and have a little dim sum
