Vegan Options on the Wriggle App

Wriggle has landed in Birmingham! The app works with independent restaurants, not chains or high street brands, to give you special offers. The app originated in Bristol and has extended to Bath, Bristol and Cardiff. Now even to Birmingham. I've been testing it out for the last couple of weeks to see how it fares for us vegans and whether it really lives up to its ethos of enabling you to discover new food and drink venues that are awesome.

The app is free to download from the App or Play Store. Also, it was super easy to sign up and to start seeing what offers were on. I saw that they change depending on the day and time of day. Weekday lunchtimes was a popular time for offers but I found some pretty damn good ones after work and on the weekends. It was also easy to filter according to location, time of day, day, specific venues, eat in or take away, type of food and dietary requirements, such as vegetarian or vegan. I couldn't see any filter for gluten free as yet though but I don't see why that wouldn't be next. Whilst searching through the app, I found that one of the venues was Dirty Kitch at The Juke in Kings Heath. I've been wanting to try their food for AGES, after seeing a number of my vegan friends loving their food. So I ventured there on a Thursday after work to test out the app for the first time.

The offer was "Thursday Treat: Any Dirty Vegan Main" for £6.95, normally £9. I'm one of those people that likes to plan out what they eat before they go to a venue, so the fact that the app outlines the menu on the offer page is ace. This venue's menu does change every week but it gives a good indication on what they do. I had planned to get Chick'n and Waffles but they weren't serving that, so I opted for the Jerk Chick'n, that came with slaw, rice + peas and plantain. I also like the look of the special, which was the Bush Curry. So they gave me a sample of this and mac n cheese. They didn't even know I was doing a review, however the camera may have been a giveaway.

I paid via the app, so I didn't need to exchange any money with the venue. Once you pay, you receive a code but they receive a notification and can see your name pretty much straight away. No awkwardness. I can't tell you how good this was. The portion was generous and each thing had it's own flavour. The chicken is made from seitan. I'm really weird about seitan but I enjoyed it. The best thing was the marinade. Spicy and full of depth.

My favourite thing was the Bush Curry. You can see a sample of it above with a little callaloo. Oh my god! It was lovely. Again, the perfect amount of spiciness, full of veggies and I liked that it didn't contain any substitute meats. It reminded me of a veggie curry my mum makes out of choochoo or dodi. I would never have had an incentive to go to Kings Heath and try out Dirty Kitch had it not been for this. Yep, their ethos runs true.

I have used the app on a couple other instances too. Above is when I used it at BA-HA @ Churchills, where they offer a main for £9.95, instead of £13.00. This gave me the incentive to try out the Lasagne, which is served with salad. Gorgeous chunky veggies in sheets of pasta with a stunning sauce. It was a hearty dish that is perfect for these wintery months. I've tried this eatery before, so I knew I couldn't go wrong here.

The third venue that I've tried it at, so far, is 3Threes. A known vegan favourite of mine in Birmingham. They have a couple of offers on the app but the one I went for is Any Sandwich and Hot or Soft Drink, which was £4.50, normally £7.05 and I upgraded it to include a milkshake (extra £2). I love their milkshake, as it's made from vegan ice cream and I always go for the caramel. Bloody awesome! I haven't had a toastie in a while, so I went for the Pizza Toastie, It was lovely. Loved the sauce and melted cheese oozing out. Who says you miss out when you're vegan, huh?!

Overall, I'm loving this app and I have got into looking at what offers are on, allowing me to explore vegan options that I didn't know existed. Can't to try out more

Disclaimer: I was credited a certain amount to try out the app in exchange for this review. However, the venues weren't aware of this and my views are still my own.
